GS will deny the charges. The SEC was never restored to a credible agency after the Markopolis testimony. In fact, I don't see evidence that the slightest effort was made to restore credibility. My jaded view is that the SEC is merely a pawn to those on the Hill who believe they can be reelected solely on the bases of bashing banks that are "too big to fail."
The regional banks took a pretty good hit on the news. In my estimation this downturn was unjustified. I piled into HBAN and RF at the AM bottom.
GS may not be innocent but the political motivation of the SEC can not, in my mind, be discounted. If the VP can convincingly counter the charges then this incident may be the swan song for an entire administration.
